939 CHICAGO AVENUE

Our office at 939 Chicago Avenue in Evanston, Illinois. Originally a furniture warehouse, we completely stripped the interior of the building while disturbing as little of the building's shell as possible. Minimal insertions were then made to house work spaces and office functions without disrupting the spirit of the now-exposed masonry and bow-truss structure.

CANYON HOUSE

Featured in the Society of Architects Archipedia collection of 100 Classic Buildings in Utah, the Canyon House is located at the mouth of the Little Cottonwood Canyon just south of Salt Lake City. It is sited on a steep and rugged foothill and takes full advantage of its spectacular mountainous environs. With a low profile and its emphasized horizontality, nearly half of the three-story house is buried below grade to reduce its apparent mass and respect the natural terrain. The house consists of three components: Pavilion, Parterre, and Box, all of which heighten one’s awareness of the terrain through their spatial arrangement on the site.

COURTYARD RANCH

Tucked away on a ravine near Lake Michigan, this ranch-style house, with its entry courtyard, sits behind a "Texas Cream" split-face limestone wall. Designed for an empty-nester couple with grown children, all living spaces were located on the ground floor. Immediately passing through a slot in the stone wall, visitors are welcomed into an intimate garden and a double-height window revealing a sneak peek to the unexpected voluminous world beyond.

The home itself is a simple form. Built in a U-shape configuration and featuring an inverted, amphitheater-style roof, it’s form responds to the tiered rear landscape that gently falls away into the woods. This rear façade, which features floor to ceiling windows, maximizes views of the forested ravine beyond. The use of folding accordion doors connect a Three-Season Screened Porch to the Kitchen, doubling the size of the space and allows a seamless connection to the outdoors.

DUBIN AND DUBIN IT OVER

When introduced to the historic house, what resonated was its simplicity. It had an unexpected warmth and charm. Built by the grandfather of the family, designed by the Chicago firm of Dubin + Dubin, his granddaughter and her husband desired to update the home. It was without a doubt a beautiful mid-century modern residence, although in need of some loving care. To say the least, it was going to be a sentimental project.

Their request was simple ~ “We would like to restore it to its original splendor, yet tastefully and respectfully reinvent it to fit our current lifestyle”. This would allow them to really use the house, to entertain as they did, and most importantly access the outdoors as much as possible.

The design expanded the rear of the house, opening it up to the ravine beyond, creating a tranquil and private sanctuary. Along its Southern exposure, oversized ‘Lift Slide’ Mahogany doors instantly wipe out any notion of indoors or out, exposing it to the gardens and new exterior patio.

In contrast to the original tightly squeezed and compartmentalized Kitchen, the design removed walls completely opening it up, raised the ceiling and bathed the space in sunlight. Lightly stained woods, simple painted cabinets, stainless and marble countertops and a large English Brown Oak island sit on a warm gray tile floor which grounds the new suite.

The exterior was restored including custom Mahogany windows and doors, a Master Suite exterior deck, rebuilt copper planters and restored stone and brickwork.

Now, not only is the entire Ground Level used regularly, but the family has found a new home within their old home. It is embraced and celebrated. They are loving its ‘new-ness’ all the while honoring ‘Grandpa’s house’ by respecting its mid-century roots.

estate kitchen remodel

We were asked to remodel the kitchen and living suite of the Traditional Estate house located on the Three Season Cabana property.  The client wanted to update the interior to a clean, simple aesthetic while still paying homage to the traditional heritage of the home. Our challenge was to rectify the traditional layout and existing windows of the home with a modern material palette to achieve the desired contemporary yet classical feel. We removed the bulky cabinets dividing up the kitchen and living room in lieu of a simpler, more open layout. The new openness between spaces - combined with a refined selection of soft whites and warm, natural materials - takes advantage of the plentiful amount of natural light flowing into the spaces to breathe new life into the home.

FIFTIES LOVE AFFAIR

When the owners mentioned “We’re too much in love with the memories of our aging 50’s ranch to demolish it”, that’s all we needed to hear. We knew exactly what to do. We set out to carefully remodel the home, preserving their sense of nostalgia, yet reconfiguring it and adding to it, to accommodate their newly found empty-nester lifestyle.

The house had a lot of small, dark rooms, an abundance of wood interior surfaces, and black brick floors. Thus, a primary concern was to open it up, to flood it with natural light. Additionally, the floating roofs caught our attention and became another point of departure.

GROUNDED IN MODERNISM

Rigorous parameters shaped the design of this weekend residence, three interconnected pavilions which create an architecturally dramatic, single-story house for three generations of family.

The main pavilion is at the epicenter, where everything social happens ~ cooking, dining, lounging. “It’s visually the most beautiful and physically the most comfortable part of the house; everybody wants to be there.”

Along its Southern exposure opens large sliding glass door panels which instantly wipe out any boundary between indoors and out. A dramatically cantilevered structural steel and Ipe wood brise-soliel modulates the hot sun and provides shade to an elevated outdoor dining terrace.

To the North, horizontal ribbons of structural steel shelves run in front of a 16 foot high translucent channel glass wall which backlights the Grand Space alongside a rather muscular in-situ architectural concrete wall placed for privacy.

The second pavilion is slightly elevated following the natural contour of the site housing the Master Suite whereas the third is strictly for guests, to lounge, daydream or retire, or to descend to the exercise room which opens up to the midnight blue swimming pool.

The residence is simple, honest and tactile; a warmly textured palette of natural materials ~ lead coated copper, channel glass, mahogany, steel and architectural concrete. But perhaps it is most successful in its ethereal quality, its ability to be agile and gentle.

HISTORIC BEMAN HOUSE

This historic House by S. S. Beman, Jr. (whose father designed Pullman, Illinois) is situated on a beautifully landscaped site. An extensive remodeling took place inside the existing structure and a pool and cabana were added at the side of the property, creating a private English-Tudor style estate. Exterior materials were restored and steel sash doors and windows were replaced to match the original design.

Designed as a continuation of the existing masonry site walls, the Cabana creates a courtyard for informal use. Form, proportion and detailing of the new structure follow the spirit of the historic residence. Additionally, steel sash windows and doors, rustic brick with slate accents, heavy timber posts and beams, wattle and daub stucco and clay tile roofing were chosen to closely match the materials of the residence.

Formal interior spaces (e.g., Entry, Living Room, Dining Room) were renovated to conform to the original design. To accommodate the contemporary needs of the Owner, private areas required greater alteration. This included restructuring original staff areas to create a Family Room and Kitchen and renovating the Master Bedroom suite. Although new, proportion, material and detailing of the interiors reinforce the fabric of the original.

In 2005, the Village of Winnetka selected the house for a Historic Preservation Excellence Award.

HOMESTEAD REDUX

The entryway and master suite of this home situated in the Northern Suburbs of Chicago were renovated to provide a more contemporary interpretation of the original design. We were inspired by the original Homestead and inserted a modern envelope into the entry space, incorporating a spiral plaster stair, hidden closet spaces and an inviting entry to the second floor. Updates to the master suite incorporate a more seamless movement from closet to bathroom. We retained some of the original detailing including the crown molding incorporating more contemporary elements for contrast and adding molding and curtain pockets to combine old and new.

HOUSE ON A POND

The house follows traditions within the late English Domestic Revival Period. It blends both classical forms ~ a strong axial entrance processional terminating in a figural parking court flanked by a historically appointed Coach House / Garage ~ and the adventuresome Picturesque Style ~ an asymmetrical disposition of forms and variety of textures to provide a more organic relationship with an adjacent existing landmarked pond by the late famed landscape architect Jens Jensen.

The rules of simplicity and directness, of truth of materials, and respect of the human scale of domestic architecture allow it to fit seamlessly with its surrounding historic residential vernacular.

The large Palladian-style Entry door leads visitors to a handsomely appointed Entry Gallery with its perspectival views of the formal staircase bathed  in light, the formal Living Room beyond appointed in a soft yet elegant décor, and the formal Dining Room directly ahead with views out to the rear lawn.

The use of simple, elegant materials and finishes are skillfully detailed such as custom millwork and cabinetry, staircase work, crown molding and other trim work, formed ceilings, and the like.

LAKE SHORE COUNTRY CLUB

The prestigious Lake Shore Country Club was originally built in 1910, designed by the prominent Chicago Architect Howard Van Doren Shaw. MIDWESTERN FOLLY

With its distinctive form, cleverly configured layout, elegant blend of new and old materials and thoughtful detailing, the structure is a fetching contemporary ‘folly’—but unlike the Victorian version, it offers hardworking utility rather than merely show-stopping good looks.

Constructed out of humble, readily available materials and less than 2200 square feet to meet budget and FAR constraints, this multi-purpose utility building is a compelling and evocative example of functional, innovative, straightforward and enduring design.  With sustainable, high-efficiency and/or reclaimed building materials; low-impact slab-on-grade foundation; and a site-sensitive, passive solar orientation with overhangs that further shading and solar gain, it is also eco-friendly.  And with its multi-purpose, zoned spaces that fulfill a broad range of functions, it realizes a complex and extraordinarily broad program.

Achieving this kind of impact while maximizing flexibility and aesthetics and adhering to strict limitations on budget and square footage makes this structure a small gesture with a big impact.  It also substantiates an age-old adage: the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

NORTH SHORE MODERN

The challenge was to design a modern home for a family of six on a bluff site above Lake Michigan, to celebrate the lake and to simultaneously provide privacy from neighboring views and street noise. The home needed to be multi-dimensional, including activity areas for family time, work and play, and for entertainment both indoors and out. An interesting exterior material palette was requested as were the design and coordination of all interiors, including colors, finishes, lighting, furniture and window treatments. RURAL ESTATE

The owners bought a five-acre tract of land in rural horse country northwest of Chicago, Illinois to design and build a ‘family compound’, one that would support their family of seven for years to come. SUBURBAN COTTAGE

This modern day cottage was built on the lot that once housed the owner when he was a little boy. Not only was it a nostalgic decision to build and re-establish roots in his childhood neighborhood, but it was also the allure of the neighborhood’s fabric of architecturally significant homes and the close proximity to the town that he so much enjoyed growing up in. And despite its intended humble appearance, the interiors are spacious and feature a ground floor plan that is contemporary and open, and a second floor consisting of three bedroom suites.

THREE SEASON CABANA

We were asked to design a pool cabana that would not only complement the Owner’s traditional estate but also enhance and lengthen the family’s outdoor activities throughout the year. Thus, we incorporated typical support facilities such as men’s and women’s toilets, showers and changing rooms, as well as entertainment functions including a kitchenette and central bar area, a sitting room with a fireplace for the cooler shoulder seasons, and a laundry / storage facility. Below grade is a full basement to house and conceal the pool and cabana mechanicals and to provide ample storage for out of season furniture.

TUDOR REVIVAL

This picturesque Tudor residence was comprehensively remodeled and restored to meet the needs of a ‘chef’, her husband, and their children. The project reconfigured nearly the entire Ground Floor including its key spaces ~ Kitchen, Breakfast Room, Powder Room, Mud Room and Family Room. The remainder was restored to its original charm including a newly carved limestone quoined surround at new French doors in the Living Room to access the reappointed garden. All trim profiles restored or replicated original details including crown moldings, baseboards, paneling, plinths, ogee French Doors, wainscoting and the like.

A new two-story addition was inconspicuously added with critical attention to detail allowing a seamless match to the existing front façade. In addition, the exterior was completely restored including the replacement of all windows and doors, repair of original roofing slates and new to match, new copper flashing, brickwork to match, restoration of existing wood siding and trim, stucco and timber restoration, stonework restoration, new and restored crenellation and paneling at the two-story bay window, and a complete paint and finishes restoration scope. All existing details were restored to their original designs.

However, the “Chef’s Kitchen” is the piece de resistance of the newly configured space. The cabinetry was designed to accommodate the cook’s requests, special spaces for cooking utensils, Mix Masters, Cuisinarts, cutting knives, etc. Watery blue and sea foam green tiles along with pale blue paint colors were selected to soften and calm. A painted beamed ceiling with bead board infill panels float above supporting a contemporary Mouille styled bent-arm light fixture. A breakfast / homework table sits beside a re-purposed fireplace clad in Statuary White marble tiles, adding yet another dimension to the Kitchen’s luscious material palette indicating where, and when (note the clock), it’s time to work, or eat.
